If a person must be obsessed by something, I suppose a boat is as good as anything, perhaps a bit better than most. A sailing craft is not only beautiful, it is seductive and full of strange promise and the hint of trouble.

Huskies vs Ducks Football Game by Boat

Last weekend Bill and Barb Stater, Ralph, Bonnie and Scott Fillingame, Joy and I took Segue II under 4 bridges and through the Ballard Locks to Lake Washington and the U.W. vs U.O. football game. At each bridge we had to signal with an air horn (1 three second blast and 1 one second blast) to open the bridge. Every time the bridge would slowly open in front of us as cars stopped to let us through. Such a sense of power! After a beautiful trip through the canal, Lake Union and Lake Washington we arrived at the stadium. We later took Segue II back to the Salmon Bay Marina on Lake Union and went by bus to watch the Ducks whoop on the Huskies. It was a perfect weekend and one more item on my bucket list gets a check! Scott was kind enough to shoot the video. I think we just established a new biannual tradition.

Hoisting the New Furling Jib

A few weeks ago Joy and I stayed at the Port Ludlow Resort Hotel on a night the "sailboat circus" was performing.  The show is a French couple (and their 5 year old daughter) who travel up and down the west coast, between Mexico and Canada doing acrobatics on their 35 foot sailboat.  They sort of reminded us of how we probably looked hoisting the new roller furling sail on Segue II earlier this summer!

Trip to Victoria B.C.

We had a nice passage to Victoria last weekend.  Although we had fog on the way over and had to motor the entire way, the weather was good (for sailors) on the return trip.  We were able to set the sails and stay on the same run for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.  I was even able to shoot some video instead of trimming sails. I love the sound of wind and waves.  Can't wait to get out there again!

Poulsbo Passage

We had a great time last weekend taking Segue II from Port Hadlock to Poulsbo.  The weather was unfriendly for sailors (little wind and some rain) but we had a good time anyway.  Poulsbo is a neat little town that takes Joy back to her "Scandahoovian" roots.  The town even came with a goofy little group doing folk dances from the 14th century. (see video) Stopped at Hama Hama on the way up and got oysters to barbecue on the boat using a Bobby Flay recipe "Hog Island Oysters."  WOW!

This weekend it's Isabel on Segue II for hopefully a few short sailing trips in Townsend Bay.  I've been looking forward to this one since the day she was born!!!

Summer 2011

Feels like summer has finally arrived!  This past winter some significant changes were made aboard Segue II.  She was equipped with a new radar, a new A.C. control panel, new bottom paint and even a new furling jib. Our escapades in the fog last summer made the new radar seem like a great idea.  The new A.C. panel will just make the shore power work better and bottom paint is just a maintenance project that needs to be done every few years. The new jib was a surprise.  We tried to get the old jib cleaned, but when we took it of the boat it had torn. The folks who looked at it in Port Townsend didn't think it could even stand the washing.  It was the original jib and about 27 years old!  So, we were able to buy one on-line and it arrived yesterday. We'll go up in a few weeks and hoist it. Trips this summer include Poulsbo, Victoria B.C., Seattle, San Juan Islands (Rosario, Friday Harbor, Deer Harbor), and day sails in the bay.  This fall we will take Segue II through the Ballard Locks and go to the Huskies/Ducks football game on the U. of W. campus.  Navigating the locks and going to a football game via Segue II have been two of my bucket list items for some time now. Most of you who read this will be joining Joy and me on at least one of these adventures.  Hope you are as excited as I am.  (I even found a Count Basie tune this winter called Segue in "C" that we will play for you as we sail.  I've even considered re-naming the boat "Segue In Sea," but some of you know the rituals and traditions that go with a new christening and I just don't know if we're up for that!)  See you aboard real soon!!!  Jim
